Beyond the Patio Set: Creating Outdoor Spaces Designed for Living

Gone are the days when a table, a few lounge chairs, and an umbrella were all we expected from our backyards. Today, we treat our outdoor spaces as true extensions of our homes; places where we gather, entertain, and spend time on a regular basis recharging and relaxing.

In fact, since COVID, we’ve all experienced our homes differently. We began living our entire lives at home during that time, and in the process, we discovered just how much potential our outdoor environments hold.

When working with clients to design their outdoor areas, my team and I aren’t just selecting outdoor furniture. We’re creating supportive, restorative spaces that feel every bit as inviting and elevated as the interiors we design for them.

In fact, the best outdoor spaces feel like indoor spaces that just happen to be outside.

Comfortable Seating Invites Connection

Comfort is always the starting point. Whether it’s a few quiet moments spent enjoying your coffee, an evening gathering with family, or entertaining friends on a warm summer night, I believe your outdoor spaces should encourage people to linger.

Rather than defaulting to matching furniture sets that make your outdoor space look staged rather than designed, we curate just the right pieces to create a seating arrangement that feels collected and inviting. Thoughtful layouts, generous proportions, and comfortable upholstery all contribute to outdoor spaces that support how our clients want to live.

Many of the same principles we use to create sanctuary spaces inside the home apply to creating beautifully comfortable outdoor spaces, as well.

Intentional Color Palettes

When trying to achieve an elevated outdoor space, choose a color palette that embraces the landscape rather than competes with it.

I love to draw inspiration from the surrounding environment for both interior and exterior color palettes. Selecting colors that feel organic and connected to the natural setting is one of the best ways to create harmony in the design.

Outdoor spaces that feature rich neutrals, earthy greens, warm woods, and layered tones can’t help but feel timeless and grounded.

Of course, bright primary colors and trend-driven hues certainly have their place. But more intentionally curated palettes create the relaxed refinement our clients seek.

The goal is for the furnishings to feel harmonious with the view; not to overpower it.

A beautiful outdoor living experience isn’t achieved by simply placing some furniture by the pool.

Finishing the space with accessories, planters, pillows, and thoughtfully selected decorative pieces adds warmth and personality that echo that of the interior. These details transform an outdoor area from merely functional to positively memorable.

Layered Lighting

Some of the most magical moments to spend in an outdoor space happen after the sun goes down.

Whenever possible, I love bringing in multiple light sources to allow the outdoor area to feel welcoming long after the daylight fades. Lanterns, sconces, landscape lighting, candles, and subtle architectural fixtures all work together to create ambiance and functionality.

When thoughtfully designed, lighting can transform an outdoor gathering into an unforgettable experience.

Comfort Underfoot

One of the easiest (yet most often overlooked) ways to make an outdoor space feel as comfortable and elevated as an interior space is to consider what’s happening beneath your feet.

Adding an outdoor rug to a furniture grouping creates warmth and comfort while also visually grounding the area.

It adds another layer of richness and helps to further blur the line between indoors and out.

Outdoor Living Includes the Table, Too

Designing today’s outdoor spaces to support the way we actually live means giving them everything we need to help us celebrate the moments that matter most there.

An outdoor dining table worthy of gathering around is one of these essential elements. Again, it’s not about defaulting to an out-of-the-box set. Bringing together just the right table with the perfect (supremely comfortable) chairs is what makes the ensemble feel cozy and elegant.

Going even further to create thoughtfully layered tablescapes with beautiful linens, gathered flowers, candlelight, and meaningful dishware will transform even the most casual meals into savored occasions.

Being able to enjoy environments like this is what helps bring us back to center.
